Dress Code

Isle of Wight Academy students are representatives of the school and should dress appropriately. Any students in violation of the dress code will be sent to the office. The Administration makes the final determination on appropriate appearance.

Dress Code Grades 6-12

Boys:

  • Facial hair should be neatly trimmed.
  • No sleeveless shirts or cut-off shirts may be worn.
  • Boys are not permitted to wear earrings or any body piercings (brow, tongue, nose, etc.) to any school functions.
  • Shorts may be worn but should be neat in appearance (not ragged or torn). No bathing suit shorts are allowed.

Girls:

  • Shorts, dresses, skirts and rompers are to be no shorter than four inches above the top of the knee.
  • All clothing must have sleeves. Clothing that exposes cleavage or allows exposure of the midriff is not permitted.
  • Girls may wear “yoga” style pants or leggings but must be covered four inches from the top of the knee.
  • Girls may have ear piercings. No visible body piercings are allowed (brow, tongue, nose, etc.).

Boys/Girls:

  • Clothing designed with suggestive pictures or slogans with gross overtones, sexual references, alcoholic beverage or cigarette advertisements, or drug references are strictly prohibited.
  • PE clothes are not to double as school clothes.
  • Sunglasses will not be worn in the classroom.
  • Students shall wear their hair neat in appearance with no “outlandish” or “faddish” styles. Boys shall not wear their hair below the shirt collar; no ponytails and no buns are allowed.
  • Hats shall not be worn inside buildings, and must be worn with the brim facing forward.
  • Undergarments must be worn and students may not wear clothing that allows undergarments to be visible.
  • No cut-off ragged clothing may be worn. Non-functional patching is not permitted. No excessively baggy pants are to be worn. No pajama style pants may be worn.
  • Students must wear shoes laced or appropriate footwear. No athletic slide type shoes or rubber flip flops are permitted.
  • No paraphernalia such as chains may be worn.

Preschool-5th Grade

All elementary students (preschool-fifth grades):

Girls:

  • Students must wear appropriate footwear. Shoes for recess must cover the back of the foot with a strap.
  • Students may not wear hats in the classrooms.
  • Shorts may be worn but should be neat in appearance (not ragged or torn).
  • Students should wear appropriate, comfortable clothing and shoes on PE day.
  • Tops should be neat in appearance and tucked in if appropriate.
  • Students shall wear their hair neat in appearance with no “outlandish” or “faddish” styles. Boys shall not wear their hair below the shirt collar; no ponytails and no buns are allowed.
